How to Change Tesla Mobile Connector Adapters

How to change adapters on the Tesla Mobile Connector

The Tesla Mobile Connector is a mobile EV charger made by Tesla. It includes a NEMA 5-15 (120v wall plug) adapter and after mid-August 2022 a NEMA 14-50 adapter (Level 2) is included as well. In addition, Tesla sells a variety of adapters to let owners charge from pretty much any energy source with the Mobile Connector.

How to Change Charging Adapters

What is not obvious is how to change between the different plug adapters. The first time we used the Mobile Connector we were looking for release buttons or a tool for removing adapters. However, as it turns out the plug adapters are held entirely by friction. Just hold both ends firmly and give it a good yank, and the adapters will come out.

More About the Mobile Connector

The TMC is intended to be used as a mobile connector out on the road. For this reason, it maxes out at only 32 amps at 240 volts, and the cord is only 20 feet long. Because it handles less current than more powerful home-based charging stations, the cord is also thinner and easier to handle. Although many owners use the TMC as their primary home charging station, Tesla warns that increased use may wear it down faster.
