What do you consider fast charging? Level 3 DC chargers can vary from older 50 kW chargers to ubiquitous V3 Supercharger stations that are rated to 250 kW. Many Electrify America stations began offering 350 kW capable equipment, and the newest Mercedes Benz branded stations can go up to 400 kW!
However, the current record holder is a small EV charging company called Gravity. We visited the recently opened Gravity Charging Center in New York City to see their implementation of an ultra-fast charging station. Gravity specializes in DC charging, and it has Google as one of its investors. This startup brings a unique cable management system capable of reaching any corner of the vehicle, and compact electrical cabinets that do not take up any parking space.
One thing to note though, is there are no automated payment terminals at this location. Instead, an employee is on hand to help EV owners initiate a charge as well as take payment using a credit card machine. Although the EV connectors are CCS1 on these Gravity chargers, they have CCS-to-Tesla adapters on hand to handle Tesla charging too.
Located at 401 W 42nd Street in Manhattan, this location is a perfect testing ground in one of the densest populated cities in the world. This 24-stall location is ready to handle private cars as well as the ever-growing fleet of electric ride-sharing vehicles in New York.
